The art of communication
Strategic communication is always oriented toward the client who wants to achieve the goal or solve his problem. The role of psychologist is to create an authentic relationship with patient, full of empathy, reciprocal acceptance and understanding. Communication is the key point. Active listening (verbal and paraverbal) and observation of the patient behavior (gestures, posture, way of speaking, etc.) helps to understand better his way of perceiving the reality and reacting on it.
Communication process according to Paul Watzlawick’s approach:
Paul Watzlawick (author of „Pragmatic of the human communication”) defines five, basic axioms that are necessary to have a functioning communication between two individuals. If one of these axioms is somehow disturbed, communication might fail.
1) One Cannot Not Communicate - Every behavior is a kind of communication.
2) Every communication has a content and relationship aspect. This means that all communication also includes information on how the talker wants to be understood and how he himself sees his relation to the receiver of information.
3) The nature of a relationship is dependent on the punctuation of the partners communication procedures. In human interactions there is no cause and effect. The act of communication appears to be cyclic.
For example: which sentence is true?
„I am depressed, that’s why from 2 years I don’t go out ”
or
„From 2 years I don’t go out, so I’m depressed”.
4) Human communication involves both digital (verbal, logical and rational languages) and analog modalities (non verbal, language of change, metaphors, narration, aphorisms, ecc.).
5) Inter-human communication procedures are either symmetric (two equivalent roles which try to mirroring themselves) or complementary (relationship bases on differences; one-person demands, controls, the other submits).
